Description: I was flying out of Phoenix to Chicago on January 16th, 2013 around 7:20 PM when I noticed three amber colored lights hovering at about our same altitude (maybe around 5,000 feet up). I noticed them because I was trying to determine what several other red lights were. (They turned out to be a bunch of radio tower lights on a hill.) Then I noticed the three amber lights. They were very big and bright. When looking at nearby planes in the sky, I would say these lights were 30 times bigger than a typical plane light. The three lights seemed to be in a triangle shape and they seemed to have more of a streaking out from the top, bottom, left and right than normal lights. They kind of pulsed a bit.
I am not going to describe this well, but they seemed to not only hover in one place, but also seemed to maintain speed with my plane (i.e. we never ‘passed’ the lights). As I watched, the left light blinked out slowly, followed by the middle light and finally the right light. I could see no outline of anything as they went out, which I would have expected.
I probably watched the lights for a full 2 minutes. When I got home, I searched for sightings on Google and it seems that many people had similar sightings that night.
Response of Witness to Investigator Questions:
What was the airline and flight number that you were on?
Response: Southwest airline flight 1618
Did any other passengers on your flight see the objects?
Response: It was a very empty flight, so there wasn’t anyone near me when I witnessed this, so I don’t know. I didn’t notice anyone else noticing it.
I am assuming that you had just taken off from Phoenix. Is that correct?
What were weather conditions? Were skies clear?
Response: Clear skies. It was just after sunset, but it was definitely dark, not dusk.
