Update – October 12, 2016: – Radar analysis obtained from the FAA (see graphic above) has revealed that the object witnessed from Sherwood and Canby, Oregon was a high altitude balloon. This conclusion was reached because high altitude balloons use a special beacon code and this code was used. Radar indicates that more than one balloon may have been launched. The balloon or balloons were between 55,000 and 60,000 feet in altitude. The origin of the balloons is not known. I contacted NASA and they did not launch the balloon or balloons. NASA said that another firm called “Near Space” in Tillamook, Oregon launches high altitude balloons. However, Near Space did not respond to my inquiries so the origin and mission of the balloon is not known.

The above graphic shows that the balloon was moving in an east-northeasterly direction at 23 MPH. (The red arrows on the map show the trajectory of the balloon.) This is consistent with the winds aloft determined from the local balloon launch in Salem, Oregon. Three hours of radar data were requested from 3 PM to 6 PM. The FAA redacted data from 3:55 PM to 4:50 PM because of law enforcement activity. It is believed that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was conducting operations. It is not believed that the balloon was used for this purpose. Therefore the above graphic shows two flight tracks for the balloons. The middle portion of the track from 3:55 to 4:50 PM was not available. Also note that the two witness locations in Sherwood and Canby, Oregon are outlined in blue.

The fact that the witnesses did not see the balloon tether is understandable considering the height of the balloons. Tethers would not have been visible at a height of 55,000 to 60,000 feet.

Original Witness Reports and Notes Follow:

Description: Here is my UFO report for Sunday 7-31-2016; 4 PM to 7 PM, Sherwood, OR plus see attachments:

I went outside at 4 PM on 7-31-2016 and looked up to see a white stationary object. I knew from experience it was a UFO and went to get my 2 binoculars and 2 camcorders.

Through my high power binoculars I could see up close a fat saucer shaped object tilted 45 degrees and not moving. One half of the object was white in color and the other half clear transparent. I also could see evenly spaced ridges running around the rim.

The object rotated very slowly over time. It looked to be about 10,000 feet high? It could have been as big as an airliner?

The wind at upper levels was blowing from NW to SE and 10+ knots with no effect on the object. It was moving, but so slow as to appear stationary. It took 3 hours to go from Sherwood to the East to the Tualatin area. My neighbor was also a witness.

At 2 PM in Canby, OR not far from Sherwood a Parachute shaped object was seen and stayed in the sky for the 2 hours before I saw the same UFO here. The story is on the NUFORC (National UFO Reporting Center) website.

It is not and does not look like a weather balloon. A weather balloon was launched at Salem, OR at about 4 PM, but would have been blown South of Salem with the wind. the local Channel 12 news station was called and they did have a UFO report of a white object between 5 and 6 PM to the East of me (probably the same object)?

Note: We are trying to acquire a copy of the video. We also will be requesting aviation and weather radar data to see if the object was detected. Updates will be posted. This object is not likely a weather balloon because the winds aloft would have kept the balloon to the south. Also weather balloons generally only stay afloat for around 1 hour before bursting and falling to the Earth. Several other witnesses saw a similar object in nearby Canby, OR. Also a local Portland, OR TV station (channel 12) received reports of the object. Perhaps the balloon could have been some type of experimental high altitude balloon?

Update – Aug 11, 2016: The witness sent winds aloft values measured in the area at the time of the sighting. (See list below.) The degree readings are the directions from which the wind was blowing. Doppler weather radar animations confirm that the winds were from the west to northwest. The Doppler weather radar did not show any unusual returns. The radar was in clear air mode and normally picks up birds, insects, atmospheric particulates, etc. in this mode. The direction of movement suggests the object was moving with the wind, but it was moving quite slow. There were several witnesses to the sighting and the object may have been visible for up to 5 hours. The altitude of the object is not known. Also we have requested aviation radar data from the Federal Aviation Administration. We do not expect to receive the data for at least a month. Updates will be posted.

3,000 feet. > 10 knots > 330 degrees

5,000 feet. > 11 knots > 330 degrees

8,000 feet. > 8 knots > 310 degrees

10k feet. > 10 knots > 290 degrees

16k feet. > 25 knots > 270 degrees

20k feet. > 38 knots > 270 degrees

30k feet. > 61 knots > 270 degrees

39k feet. > 68 knots > 270 degrees

I’m 100% sure that’s a balloon. It’s translucent, but you can see bright areas catching the reflection of the sun. Compare it to the 13 photos here of a scientific balloon spotted over New Mexico in 2014:

    Not so 100% for me.
Yes it could be a balloon , but it is not a scientific balloon since there is no instrument package hanging below. NASA’s “super pressure” balloons are only launched in a safe to the public location > (closest launch location is Texas and NM) . They can go as high as 160,000 feet and be up for days . When instrument package is released the balloon is deflated and falls on command.

Yes, I agree that this object may not be a balloon. The only fact that would suggest that it is a balloon would be that it was moving with the wind, but probably too slowly.

  3. Leah says:

I saw the object as well while in Canby. I took a picture of it around 4 PM. Three others with me also saw it. I would occasionally look up at it and it was still there. Then it was gone.
