Description (In Witness's Own Words): Listen to Clip of Witness Interview (MP3)
This happened about 8 years ago and since then I have spent much time researching and thinking about what was seen by myself and my daughter. We live in a very small town and southwestern North Dakota (pop. 17) and we can see the whole town from our front and back porch. Highway 85 runs right through our town, and while we are the smallest county seat in the nation, we are also proud to have the highest point in the state just a few miles south. One very cold winter night my fifth grade daughter called to me from her room. It was about 2:00 am but I awoke immediately and went to her room. She whispered to me that I had to lay down on the bottom bunk and look out the window. As she had her bunk beds pushed right up to a north facing window I had a clear view of the yard next door, the highway and the camp ground across the alley. It was a very clear night and the street lights allowed me to see very well. As I looked out at the campground I saw a big mother raccoon and three babies playing on the picnic tables. The mother and babies would go over the table and down on the ground. Sounds pretty normal until you realize that you can see through the mist colored animals and they change into the shape of a stooped old woman with long hair and she in turn changes into a dark pillar that moves with a slidey quick motion across the camp ground and across the highway and back again. This pattern repeated itself many times as we watched whispering to each other what we were seeing. The pillar was darker than the raccoons and the old woman and went up and out of sight into the sky. I told my daughter that her father had to see this, but when I went into the bedroom and told him to get up and look out our bedroom window all the lights in town went out. You could not see anything from the window then. I have no idea what this was but the more thought I have given this the more convinced I have become that it was somehow extraterrestrial. There was nothing vague or unclear about what we saw....nothing "out of the corner of the eye" about this. It was as plain as anything and we watched it for about 7 minutes. My daughter had watched it for a much longer time, but finally called to me when she started to be afraid she was "losing her mind". I would appreciate some ideas on this. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Thank you.

Investigator's Notes: In my interview I was impressed with the sincerity of the witness. The witness stated a couple of times that she "would take a lie detector case." It is the most unbelievable, but believable story that I have come across. The witness is employed as a professional and has an excellent educational background. I have no reason to doubt her story. Her daughter still vividly recalls the incident. Ironically neither one of them were that afraid. This case is really more in the "ghost encounters" realm, but given that the witness said that the sighting ended when the "pillar" flew away it can fit into the UFO category.
