Sighting Reports 2002

Fast Silent Object Sighted in Everett, WA June 17, 2002

Sighting Occurred: Monday, June 17, 2002, 03:21 P.D.T.
Sighting Reported: Monday, June 17, 2002, 07:01 P.D.T.
Sighting Location: Everett, Washington

Description: Two graveyard shift workers were taking a break when they noticed a rapidly moving object in the north which moved in a southerly direction across the visible sky in about 5 seconds.  Apparently the view of the sky was obscured by buildings to the south of the observers.  Therefore only about 50% of the sky was visible.  The object appeared about the half the size of a dime held at arm's length and was bluish-green in color.  No sound was associated with the object.

Investigator Notes:  A follow-up interview was conducted with one of the witnesses via email.  No visit to the sighting location was made.  In an attempt to identify this sighting I collected the following information:

  1. Weather data - The sky was clear at the time of the sighting.

  2. Positions of visible satellites - Some satellites were visible, but direction of movement was different.

  3. Space junk - I called NORAD and learned that no space junk re-entered the Earth's atmosphere at this time.

  4. Astronomical phenomena - I learned that both the June Acquilid and June Lyrid meteor showers were visible during this time.

  5. Moon phase and position - I learned that the moon had set over an hour before the siting.

  6. Other sightings in the area - No other UFO sightings were reported to the National UFO Reporting Center.

Based on the information provided by witnesses and on data collected it is my opinion that this sighting was a meteor probably associated by the June Lyrids.  The June Lyrids have a bluish-green appearance and are very visible on moonless nights.  (The moon was not visible at the time of the sighting.)  I ruled out satellites because the speed of this object was too fast and the direction of movement was different than satellites visible at the time of the sighting.

Bottom Line:  Lyrid meteor shower.
