Description (In Witness's Own Words: On November 27th: I
think it was somewhere between 6 PM and 7 PM. I wasn't wearing a
watch, but a friend of my 16 year old son had dropped by for a visit
and we ordered three phili steak sandwiches for dinner to be
delivered to the house. After dinner I went out to my backyard to
have a cigarette, because I never smoke indoors. When I go outside I
usually look at the sky and on this evening I noticed a star which I
had not noticed before. It was very close and very bright. I kept
looking at it for a few minutes and noticed that the glow or rays
around the star was moving and getting larger and smaller, almost
like a pulsating effect but really in slow motion. I noticed that
the planes which usually pass over our house on their way to the
airport were in some cases flying above this bright star like
object. I called out to my son to come outside and take a look. He
also noticed it was very bright and close. I shared my observations
with him and he said that it may be movements which I had noticed
may be an illusion from possibly looking at the object for too long.
When I heard that, I decided to take out my camera and prove that my
eyes were not deceiving me. So I quickly pulled out my Canon EOS D60
- 6 megapixel digital SLR camera, my 70-210mm zoom lens, and my
tripod. I knew I had to put the camera on a tripod, otherwise the
long exposures would not be in focus. I was so nervous that I put
the camera on automatic (which means that the camera automatically
figured out the correct exposures based on the object which was in
focus). I snapped a few shots in my backyard and checked them out
each time on the LCD display on the back of the camera. I zoomed in
to see what the camera was capturing and sure enough there was
movement. Each time I snapped a photograph the light was doing
something different. I than decided to go out and take more photos
from the front of my house. So I took all my equipment and went out
to the front of my house, however since our street is on a hill, I
couldn't see the light from the front of my house. I had to walk up
past a few of our neighbor's home before I could get the object into
view. I place my camera and tripod in the middle of our street and
facing north-west and photographed a few more shots manually.
Exposures range from 10 to 30 seconds at Aperture F16. A few cars
were passing by and I had to move my camera and tripod several times
and re-position again. The neighbor's house which is partly visible
in my photographs, he and his wife came outside because a guest of
theirs was leaving and saw me snapping photographs. He approached me
and asked me what I was doing, and I explained that I was
photographing what seemed a to be a very bright star. He laughingly
asked if I thought it was a UFO, and I said I didn't know, but it
was very interesting. As he and his wife went back inside their
home, I realized that the object had moved and I couldn't get it in
view. So, I ran back to my house and to my backyard to make sure
that I was not delusional and sure enough the object was not there
anymore. I called out to my son, once again, to come out and take a
look. He also confirmed that the object had disappeared and that the
whole thing was really weird. On November 28th: My son and I were
headed out to take care of a few errands and grab a bite to eat.
Unfortunately, the car wouldn't start that night. We were both very
frustrated and I went back into the house to call AAA for a jump.
While waiting for the AAA service truck to arrive, I once again,
went out to my backyard for a smoke. I looked up and once again the
bright star looking object was in the same area I had seen it last
night. Only this time it seemed much closer and brighter. I called
out to my son to come out and take a look. He was completely
baffled. The sun had set, but there was still some light out. I
quickly looked at the time and noticed it was 5:38PM. I went in
quickly and grabbed my camera equipment. I snapped a few more shots.
The every 1st and 2nd shots at F16-30second exposure. Again, the
camera was on a tripod and it was firmly planted. The camera was not
moving, but the light was, as you can see in the exposures. I did
change the position of the camera a few times, but if the
photographs were to be overlapped on top of each other (which you
can do by the way, in photoshop layers), you can clearly see that
the object is moving. Unfortunately, that evening the camera
batteries ran out and I couldn't snap any more shots. The AAA
service came by and we ended up going out. My son and I kept looking
at the light and it seemed to be moving. The bright light traveled
all the way to the city of Thousand Oaks, area code, 91306. We know,
because we went to grab a bite at the IN & OUT in that area. After
ordering our meal to eat in the car, we parked the car in the
parking lot of the center where we had a pretty good view of the
object. As we ate and watched we noticed it kept moving north-west
and the light kept getting bright and dim as it moved. We went back
home after we were finished eating, and since the light was in the
opposite direction , we just couldn't keep an eye on it anymore. My
observations: To the naked eye, the object looks like a very bright
star. You would have to look at it for a few minutes before
realizing that it is actually pulsating and getting brighter and
dimmer. The shots taken by the camera prove that the light inside
the object is moving and shapes itself in various different forms.
At first I thought maybe stars have the same kind of thing going on
when you take photographs of them with long exposures, but I did
some research on the internet and looked at photographs which
contained various different stars, and they are all circular shaped
bright lights with a bright aura around the stars. This is not the
case with this particular object. The object seems to split into two
in one photograph and it almost looks like there is a curved shaped
rod which sticks on some shots and on others the shape of the object
looks like a cigar with and without this curved looking rod sticking
out. Anyway, I can't explain it, hopefully you or someone might have
some insight on what this is all about.
Investigator's Notes: The
witness reported the sighting by phone and later followed up her
report with the detailed written report (above). It should be noted
that the witness is a professional photographer and has a detailed
knowledge of camera equipment. She said that she had just some taken
some photos of an unusual light. I have viewed the photos and
don't know what the witness photographed. The witness used a
Canon EOSD60 digital camera to take the photos. She took long
exposures (up to 10 minute shutter speeds). She had the camera
mounted on a tripod. Therefore any "time exposure" shown in
the photos is due to movement of the light and not "camera
movement." I have looked at satellite charts and found no bright
visible satellites in the area at the time of the sighting.
The International Space Station was visible in the area, but it was
only visible in the early morning hours. The winds aloft were
primarily from the Northwest from 5 to 10 thousand feet. After
more analysis I believe that the witness has been photographing
Venus and/or Mars in the early evening hours and Jupiter in the
early morning hours. All of these planets are very bright in
November and December of this year.
