Sighting Reports 2006

Couple Observe Navy Jet Pursue Diamond Shaped Object

Radar Returns in Portland, Texas Area on August 31, 2006

Radar Analysis at the Time of Sighting. Radar Data Shows a "Possible" Track of an Object Moving Over 1,000 MPH to the Northwest & Then Change Directions to the West (and Slow to 529 MPH). This is Somewhat Consistent With the Witness Report. The Other Arrows Indicate Direction of Flight of Commerical Aircraft.

Date of Sighting: August 31, 2006
Time of Sighting: 10:30 PM CDT
Date Reported: August 31, 2006
Duration of Sighting:
About 1 Minute
Location of Sighting: Portland, Texas (Southeast Coast of Texas About 15 Miles North of Corpus Christi)
Latitude: 27.87 Degrees North
Longitude: 97.30 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: Two
Number of Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Clear

Description: The witness called immediately after he and his wife experienced their sighting. The couple were watching the stars and looking for meteor showers. (They had seen several meteor showers recently.) All of a sudden they saw a very bright diamond shaped object fly towards the northwest. The object then stopped made a "U turn" and flew back in a southeasterly direction. The object then reversed direction and flew rapidly towards the northwest and disappeared. At that point both witnesses saw a low flying Navy jet with "after burners" on flying in the direction of the object. The jet was so loud that all of the neighborhood dogs began howling. The witness stated that this was highly unusual and he never heard dogs respond like that nor had he heard a jet that loud. The witnesses live in the vicinity of three Naval Air Stations.

Investigator's Notes: I interviewed the husband at length and he seemed to be quite sincere and was detailed in his description of the sighting. Both witnesses were shaken by the experience and immediately reported it. This case is unusual in two aspects: One is that the object flew quite erratically reversing direction twice, and it apparently was pursued by a military jet that was flying low at high speed in a populated area. Radar analysis does not confirm flight of military jet. However, radar does show returns that track movement of a craft to the northwest and then to the west. (See radar map above.) These radar echoes were picked up within a minute of 10:30 PM CDT. (Note: This was not a strong track containing several echoes, but does indicate a possible detection of an unidentified aircraft in the general direction of movement of the diamond shaped light as reported by the witnesses.)
