Description (In Witness's Own Words): The sighting occurred on January 14th, 2007 at approximately at 6:23pm. I was casually looking at the clear sky as I was doing part time job picking real estate signs. At the eastbound off ramp from Hwy 40 & route 86 in Carrboro, NC near Chapel Hill. While looking up high into the sky I noticed what I thought was a jet airplane, it was a white object (dot) that looked about the same size relatively as a star from my perspective. There were some other airplanes in the air but they were flying much lower and towards the RDU (Raleigh-Durham) airport east. The object I thought was a jet traveling swiftly from my left to towards my right in a straight line path for about 5 – 10 secs. Then it stopped abruptly. I thought it was a shooting star but it never faded. It just stopped. After a few seconds it started to move short distances darting one way then the other, but the path was not the same. It was nearly perpendicular to the original path. It just flew in the same vicinity, moving back and forth as though it was bouncing. (It displayed short movements up and down.) Then it would dart in a single direction and stop, then dart again and stop. All of these movements seem to be very precise. Then it made movements in the shape of an inverted “U”, but tilted at about 45 degrees back and forth retracing its path. Then it started to bounce again. I got on my cell phone and tried to reached several friends. I reached a friend of mine in Durham, NC about 8 miles east. I asked her to go to her door and look up at the sky. I told her to find the three bright stars that appeared to be in a big almost straight line and then look over to the left a good ways and left her head up. I asked if she saw that star sitting by itself. She said yes. I told her to watch it. I waited a couple seconds until I saw it move. I then asked her what was it doing. She said bouncing up and down. I felt relieved. I said thank you. I’ll call you back. I called another friend to see it but by that time clouds had rolled in and it was dim. The object then flew off in a direction away from me a direction parallel to those large stars in a straight line I referenced but not at all close to them. I have talked to her several times and I called her on speaker phone in the presence of others and asked her to recall what happened Sunday night. She would corroborate what we witnessed together. I went over to her house on January 17th and asked her about what she saw. She told me approximately where the object was from her viewpoint and how it zoomed off in an easterly direction. She said at that point she became frightened and went back into her home. The object was white, a little circle like a star in the sky. It was not the brightest object in the sky, but it did pass right by the brightest starlike object. I would guess the entire duration of the event would have been 30 to 40 minutes. I would guess at the end of the event it was in the general direction of RDU (Raleigh Durham) airport. I do not know what this thing was, but I have never seen anything move through the sky the way this thing did. It displayed erratic almost linear motion except when it made movements that were like semi-circles, retracing its path. It retraced its path very tight and precise. It had no light tail and there was no color change. It seemed to be a bright bluish white color. The size seemd to be consistent throughout the event.

Investigator's Notes: The witness has described in detail a light that made several erratic movements over a 30 to 40 minute time period. Sometimes stationary objects can appear to move through an optical illusion called "photokinesis." However, I don't think that was case with this sighting given the amount of motion described. The witness's observations are also corroborated by his friend. (The second witness has not been interviewed.) I don't know what the witness sighted given available data. Another sighting occurred in Fayetteville, NC at 9:26 PM EST. Fayetteville is about 55 miles straight south of Carrboro. These sightings could be related although the descriptions are somewhat different.
