Sighting Reports 2007

Couple Observe Light to The NW That Changed Brightness And
Danced "Up and Down"

Date of Sighting: April 11, 2007
Time of Sighting: Started at 9:10 PM CDT
Date Sighting Reported: April 11, 2007
Duration of Sighting: About 1 Hour
Location of Sighting: Cerro Gordo, Tennessee (SW Tennessee About 100 Miles SW of Nashville
Latitude: 35.3 Degrees North
Longitude: 88.18 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: Two
Number Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Clear Skies. Stars Visible. (Rain Had Been Occurring Earlier in the Day.)
Astronomical: The Planet Venus Was at Azimuth 297 Degrees (Northwest) and Low on Horizon at the time of the sighting. Venus Was Very Bright With Brightness Magnitude of -4.0. (Negative Numbers Mean That The Object is Very Bright.)

Description: The witness phoned his report and had the light in view when he was on the phone. He said that the light would change in brightness and appear to dance "up and down." He said that the light was at about tree level. At the beginning of the sighting the light was slightly above tree level. Therefore the light had moved lower with respect to the horizon as time progressed. The direction of the sighting was to the northwest.

Investigator's Notes: I believe that the light reported by the witnesses was Venus. Venus was low on the horizon and can therefore appear distorted and larger. (The reason is that light is moving through more of the atmosphere.) Venus also was almost in the exact position (northwest) reported by the witnesses. The apparent movement of the light is due to a phenomenon called "photokinesis" which is an optical illusion whereby the eye senses movement of a stationary object when viewed for a time.
