Sighting Reports 2007

Youth Sees Bright Light in Southern Sky Light Flashed Red & Blue

Date of Sighting: August 1, 2007
Time of Sighting: 11:13 PM PDT
Date Sighting Reported: August 2, 2007
Duration of Sighting: 5 to 6 Minutes
Location of Sighting: Mount Shasta, California. (Northern California About 50 MI From Oregon.)
Latitude: 44.4 Degrees North (Airport)
Longitude: 122.3 Degrees West (Airport)
Number of Witnesses: One
Weather: Clear Skies. Visibility 10 Miles.
Astronomical: Jupiter Was at Azimuth 195 Degrees (SSE) & Elevation of 25 Degrees at the Time of the Sighting. Jupiter at a Brightness of Magnitude -2.2.

Description: The witness called and reported her sighting about 24 hours after it happened. The witness was 12 years old, but accurately reported what she saw. She said that her parents had been viewing the same light for the past few nights. She stated that she saw a bright light that flashed alternately red and blue in the southern sky about 20 degrees above the horizon "below Venus." The witness lost sight of the light because she quit watching. (Not because the light moved or vanished.)

Investigator's Notes: Venus was not visible at the time of the sighting. I am reasonably sure that the witness saw the planet Jupiter which is quite bright in the southern sky in the evening hours in her location. It is not known the identity of the other light referenced by the witness, but two stars were visible in the location of Jupiter (Antares and Sabik).
