Sighting Reports 2007

Photos Taken of 2 Bright Lights About 30 Min. Before Sunset

Photo of Two Lights and an Enlargement of The Two Lights
Photo of The Two Lights & Enlargement

Date of Sighting: June 8, 2007
Time of Sighting: 8:30 PM NDT (New Foundland Daylight Time)
Date Sighting Reported: June 13, 2007
Duration of Sighting: 30 to 45 Seconds
Location of Sighting: St. John's New Foundland, Canada
Latitude: 47.6 Degrees North (Airport)
Longitude: 52.7 Degrees West (Airport)
Number of Witnesses: Three
Number of Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Photos Indicate Clear Skies. (Partly Cloudy Skies Recorded at Airport.) Visibility Was 15 Miles.
Astronomical: Sunset Was at 8:56 PM NDT
Visible Satellites: No Satellites Were Visible at the Time of the Photos. The First Visible Satellite Was About an Hour Later. STS-117 (Space Shuttle) Was launched on the Evening of June 8. STS-117 Was Not Visible From This Location.

Description (In Witness's Own Words): I really can't say for sure the size because when we observed it (myself and 2 friends) it looked like 2 bright lights. The larger light was white and the smaller one was red. I snapped a picture as did one of my friends. My picture shows 2 structures and my friends picture shows 2 lights, one white and one red. The lights were anywhere from 2 to 4 thousand feet in the air and about 500 to 700 feet away and moving about 150 to 200 kilometres per hour. These are just estimates, but it was bright enough to capture our attention. They were flying in a straight line in formation and did not deviate from their path. They were moving from due west to due east. (They Were Moving straight out towards the Atlantic ocean.) The time elapsed from the moment we spotted it until it went out of sight behind a hill was about 30 to 45 seconds. The lights did not blink or make any sound at all. My friend was using a more expensive camara than me. Mine is a digital that cost $100 and my friend's is a digital that cost $500.

Note on Camera: The witness stated that two cameras were used the photo session. The above photo was taken with his friend's camera. According to the file attributes of the picture a Canon EOS Rebel XT Digital camera was used to take this photo. This is a "high-end" expensive camera and retails for about $700.

Investigator's Notes: Satellite data shows no satellites were visible at the time of the sighting. I doubt if the lights were balloons due to the rapid horizontal movement and lack of ascent. Weather balloons were launched at Stephenville, New Foundland and St. John's New Foundland at 8 PM NDT. These balloons could have been visible when the photos were taken, but the winds aloft were generally from the south and at light speeds. The rapid eastward movement observed would be inconsistent with balloon movement. Meteors are also an unlikely explanation because no trail or fragmentation is visible. The photos and enlargement reveal slightly distorted spheres. The brightness is likely due to reflection of the setting sun and not due to light emissions from the objects. At this time I have no explanation for the contents of these photos.
