Description (In Witness's Own Words): My sighting occurred at 20:00 local time (8 PM) , Monday 15th October 2007. It wasdark at this time here with no moon. My sighting occurred 30 minutes ago. Greetings I just returned from a walk with the dog. I live in Whitehead, Northern Ireland. (Whitehead is on the east coast so have a huge sky.) At the above time my attention was drawn to a very bright light coming from the west at high speed. I saw no flashing navigation lights. The light was constant on its approach from the west until it rapidly faded in the distant east. It couldn't have been plane 'headlights', any way because it was moving far too fast. I have seen many 'shooting stars' which burn out very quickly and even have tails, and are so fast their gone in 2 seconds. This light took about 8 seconds to cross the sky and did appear to fade albiet almost instantly. I have also seen many satalites which are higher and appear to move slower than this object did. I also take pleasure most nights in watching the aeroplanes approaching Northern Ireland, most are headed for Belfast airport and some for Antrim. Some nights I have seen as many as seven at one time. From my vantage point I can also see planes coming from and heading to USA/Canada and even at that height navigation lights can be seen blinking. (its my neighbour, a BEA pilot, who tells me where they are going). The light that I saw obviously was not an aeroplane. This is very similar to the sighting posted on your web page.
Witness Response to Investigator Questions: The weather was fine and clear with virtually no clouds. I saw no tail or trail. It is difficult to compare in size to a full moon. In the early morning (7am) here in Northern Ireland, Venus is very high in the sky and very bright. When I seen it this morning my thinking was that the size and intensity of light was about the same as the moving light the previous night. Now I know that Venus can somtimes be mistaken as somthing mysterious, but what I saw was about 10 hours before Venus is visible in our sky, moving at high speed across the whole sky. (It moved almost from horizon to horizon.) I just can't be the only person who saw this, but Ihaven't heard of any other reports. After thinking for awhile on this I thought it might have been some space debris burning out as it entered the atmosphere. I haven't had a chance yet to talk to my neighbor, the BEA pilot, who should be more experienced in such airbourne mysteries.
Investigator's Notes: The witness has provided a lengthy report and has included considerable discussion on the rationale for his feeling that the light was unidentified. I tend to agree that the identity of the light is not easily explained. I also don't think that the light was falling space debris given that no fragmentation or trail was observed. |
