Date of Sighting: February 3, 2008
Time of Sighting: 11 AM PST
Date Sighting Reported: February 22, 2008
Duration of Sighting: One Minute
Location of Sighting: Along Umpqua River Near Canyonville, Oregon
Latitude: 42.93 Degrees North
Longitude: 123.28 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: Three
Number of Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Cloudy Skies With Light Snow. (Per Witness Observation.)

Description: The witness originally made the report by faxing 3 photos. He listed a phone number on the fax. I contacted him and he stated that himself and two others were floating west on the Umpqua River in Oregon near Canyonville. One of the team (river guide) had a camera. They noticed a Tan-Brown Metallic Object Hovering in the trees close to the river. The guide snapped three photos of the object. The object emitted no sound and did not move. As soon as they sighted the object one of the thermos bottles exploded. (It is not known if this was related to the presence of the object.) The object was to the southwest of the river. They continued to float westward and lost sight of the object. The object did not move during their sighting. The witness stated that they "wanted to get of there." He estimated that the object was 200 to 300 yards from the boat.

Comments: This is an impressive sighting considering that the witnesses were close to the object, three witnessed the object, photos were taken, unusual phenomena occurred (exploding thermos bottle), and the object displayed non-conventional behavior (hovering).

Photo Analysis: The photos were taken with an Olympus Model U790SW digital camera. The camera was of low resolution and the photos were of dimension 640 by 480 pixels. This has limited revealing of further detail through enlargement. However, the object appears to have been very close to the river. The witness estimated that the object was at a range of 200 to 300 yards. The photos were taken with a quick shutter speed: Photo one was of shutter speed 1/160 seconds, photo two was 1/100 seconds and photo three was 1/250 seconds. The quick shutter speed could have "masked" any slight movement made by the object although the object was likely still based on witness observations. Analysis has not shown any "suspension" devices on the object or any editing of the photo. (A suspension device could have been masked by the trees, but it is not believed that any suspension devices were used.) The photo bears the signature of the camera used and no information was stored with the file that would indicate software edits. The photos were only taken seconds apart. The second photo was taken 8 seconds after the first, and third photo 5 seconds after the second. The shifting in position of the object related to the trees was due to motion of the boat towards the right. The above photos were brightened somewhat by the analyst to reveal more detail. The photos reveal a "fissure" in the middle likened to fusion of two plates to each other.

Update: February 28, 2008 - I reached the guide who took the above photos. Apparently the "UFO" was nothing more than two satellite dishes welded together and suspended from the trees. The guide originally didn't know what it was, but in a later trip down the river he saw the object again and saw that it was suspended from the trees. The above photo analysis did not reveal the cables which were masked by the trees.

Update: March 3, 2008 - I had further discussions with the guide who took the photos. The guide said that the object had been there since January 26, 2008. The guide was sure that a local rancher had put the object in the trees. Apparently the rancher has a hobby of welding together metallic fragments into artwork. (There are other metallic pieces of art near his ranch.) The above three photos are the only photos taken of the object. Originally this sighting was labeled as a hoax, but no one really had intentions to create a hoax. Therefore the sighting would be more accurately categorized as a misidentification.
