Sighting Reports 2008 Family Sees Multicolored Erratic Moving Object in Southwest SkyDate of Sighting: October 6, 2008 Description: In Genesse County, New York a approximately 2:45 AM I noticed a multicolored object glowing in the southwest sky from our back deck. About every four minutes the light execute erratic movements. It would then return to the same area it originally came from in the sky. I thought that this could be a new military plane. I continued my observation for 30 minutes and then woke my family up. Four of us viewed the object until 4:28 AM when the object disappeared. The object displayed blue-green-orange lighting. Comments: The U.S. Naval Observatory showed that Jupiter was very bright in the southwestern sky at the time and at the location of the above sighting. The witnesses could have mistaken Jupiter for a multicolored object considering that Jupiter was low on the horizon at the sighting time. Sometimes planets and bright stars will display multicolor's when they are low due to more scattering of light through a thicker atmosphere. The apparent movement can be an optical illusion called autokinesis or due to the fact that Jupiter would move in and out of clouds which can appear as a "jumping" or sudden movement. |
