Sighting Reports 2008

Low Flying Red-Yellow Glowing Object Seen in Night Sky

Date of Sighting: October 17, 2008
Time of Sighting: 10:15 to 10:30 PM EDT
Date Sighting Reported: October 19, 2008
Duration of Sighting: About One Minute
Location of Sighting: Howard, Pennsylvania
Latitude: 41.03 Degrees North
Longitude: 77.67 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: Seven
Number of Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Skies Were Clear. Visibility Was 10 Miles. Winds Were From the Northeast at 10 MPH.

Description: The object appeared in the northern sky, moved slowly overhead and moved toward the southern sky. It just appeared to be fire, red, yellow, and glowing (not a ball or anything). It looked to be only a couple hundred feet above the ground. It moved in a straight line and stopped once briefly and continued to move to the south and then it just disappeared in the distance. Any explanations?

Second Report by Witness: The object did not leave a trail. In comparison to the moon if the moon were a donut, it would be smaller than the size of the donut hole. I was not large at all. The weather was clear because we were watching many planes over the area and star gazing. There was not much wind. We watched it for roughly a minute or so until it disappeared in the distance. It looked as if someone had caught a piece of paper on fire and it had crossed our path, but it kept a perfect straight path across the sky, stopped briefly overhead and continued. We had asked other people in the campground if they had seen anything, but no one else had.

Comments: Given the second report by witness I don't believe that the object was a meteor. There is a possibility that the object could have been space debris re-entering the atmosphere.
