Sighting Reports 2008

Bright Object Seen Moving Eastward in Early Morning Sky

Date of Sighting: December 31, 2008
Time of Sighting: 5:50 AM PDT
Date Sighting Reported:December 31, 2008
Duration of Sighting: 8 to 10 Minutes
Location of Sighting: Los Angeles, California
Latitude: 34.0 Degrees North
Longitude: 118.2 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: One
Weather: Dense Fog Was Observed With Visibility Only 1/4 Miles. Winds Were Calm.

Description: The skies were a bit hazy and you could only see very bright stars and planets. I had just finished parking my car in my garage and was walking around the corner to my apartment building when I looked up and saw a very bright object emerge from behind a tree moving west to east. It was too low to be a satellite (about 249 miles too low!) and had no strobe or wing lights. It made no sound as it passed overhead. It was low enough to hear any engine noise and there was none. The light was white and a little larger than Venus. About 10 seconds after I sighted the object it got a bit dimmer. I figured that it had passed behind some of the haze. This mean't the object was probably around 5,000 to 10,000 feet. I continued to watch the object until it was out of sight. The whole sighting took about 8 to 10 minutes.

Comments: The witness must have been in an area free of the fog that was shown in the official weather observation. I originally thought that the light could have been a satellite or the International Space Station. A check of satellite positions showed no bright satellites in the area and moving in the direction described by the witness.
