Woman Sees Intense Point of Light Streak North Across Night Sky

Date of Sighting: September 29, 2008
Time of Sighting: 2:35 AM PDT
Date Sighting Reported: September 29, 2008
Duration of Sighting: 2 to 3 Seconds
Location of Sighting: Newcastle, Washington (Suburb to the East of Seattle)
Latitude: 47.53 Degrees North
Longitude: 122.19 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: One.
Weather: Skies Were Clear. Visibility Was 10 Miles. Winds Were From the North at 6 MPH.

Description: I may have sighted an extreme-brightness "meteor." I'm interested in finding out if anyone else saw this object. It was so bright that I first noticed it when my eyes were still closed! It could have simply been a meteor, or possibly some space debris re-entering. Total time of observation was only 2-3 seconds, after which it extinguished while still in a clear area of the sky. the trajectory was toward the North or Northwest, which doesn't seem appropriate for satellite re-entry, but its transit across the sky (about 25-30 degrees. over 2-3 seconds) seemed rather slow for a meteor. It was observed from indoors, and emerged from behind a corner of our house so I only saw the last portion of its trajectory. From my position, it appeared roughly to the West of me, and a good 20 degrees or more above the horizon. The apparent altitude was decreasing slightly as it moved northward. The speed and direction seemed constant. There was no discernable shape to the object. It was just an intense point of light.

Comments: I agree with the witness that the light was probably a meteor or re-entering space debris. Given the observations the light was likely a small meteor.
