Weather: Reduced Visibility Snow. (Per Witness Observation.) Light Snow With 1.5 Miles Visibility and Cloud Bases at 800 Feet Was Observed at London, Ontario. London is About 55 Miles WNW of Port Dover.
Description: We were watching television when a very bright magenta glowing light appeared out the window. My husband, twelve year old son and myself jumped to our feet to look more closely. The light was quite low in the southwestern sky, near Lake Erie, Port Dover Ontario. It hovered there not moving for about twenty seconds and then disappeared heading away from us. (This would be towards the southwest.) The light was very bright and very clear, was not a burning type light as in a flare and did not fall to the earth as a flare would. This particular night it was snowing fairly heavily as well. I don't know how long it had been there before I noticed it out the window, which is just behind the television. This was nothing we had ever seen before and we just wanted to mention it.
Second Report by Witness: We are still shaking our heads as to what it was. With it snowing like that the light was still so vibrant, remained still and then moved off horizontally away from us, very bright pink. Living on the shore of Lake Erie we have seen flares many times over the years and this was not like that. This had an oblong, oval shape to it and did not change in shape or fall back to the earth. Anyway, we will probably never know. I just thought you might appreciate hearing about it.
Comments: It is difficult to say what the source of this light would be on a night with reduced visibility, but it obviously had an effect on this family. Magenta colored lights are not used on aircraft. (Aircraft use white, red, and green lights.) Sometimes colors cannot be distinguished or can be distorted under certain conditions. |
