Description: On August 2, 2008 around 10 pm Pacific time, I witnessed a large perfectly round object in the night sky. It was traveling South to North in a straight line. No sound could be heard. If you were to hold a pea an arm's length away, it was that big. At the time I compared it with the size of my pinky fingernail to get a good idea on it's size. My buddy and I hiked up to the Strawberry Wilderness area in Oregon, USA and slept in a tent that had a mesh top that allowed us to gaze at stars and watch for satellites. We saw a few satellites sailing East to West that were about the same size as stars, or just a tiny dot of light. This object seemed to emit it's own light as opposed to reflecting the sun. After coming into view for 5-7 seconds, it seemed to flash and get brighter just for a second. We had a limited view of the sky, as we were camped under good sized pine and fir trees, but we watched this thing head North on it's path and could see it through branches until it was out of sight. We had a compass and used it the next morning and I guess it was moving true North, maybe 5 degrees of West according to my recollection. I have to say that it was moving much faster than the other satellites we saw before it. The fact that it was moving South to North also seemed unusual. Was it Sky Lab or a Shuttle? I can't get over the fact that it looked so perfectly round. So much larger than a star. If a star was a grape, then this thing was a soccer ball. And why the burst of light? When it lit up it wasn't like a car's headlight or a flashlight beam coming across your vision- it just simply had a burst of energy, but the brightness stayed within the object itself. We saw a few jetliners pass overhead and those were easy to identify. This was witnessed about 15 miles south of Prairie City, Oregon, USA. According to Goggle Earth we were positioned within a few feet at 44 degrees 17' 38.56" N 118 degrees 41' 10.16" W. We were camped along the west side of Little Strawberry Lake. The elevation is about 6900 feet. I'll be wondering about this for a long time!

Additional Information Provided by Witness: My friend and I saw the object for about roughly 30-45 seconds. We were in the Strawberry Wilderness area and the skies were completely clear. Earlier in the day there were some fluffy clouds, but very scattered. We had limited view of the full night sky as we were camped under the trees. I would have to guess that while we were on our backs we could see 40 degrees of the sky to the North and maybe 15 from the south. We were positioned, incidentally, with our feet pointing practically due North. The Moon was not visible to us that night. (I noticed a couple nights ago that the Moon was a small crescent, so maybe there was a new Moon around the 2nd.) It was so round and bright that we could could track it almost all the way to the horizon through the trees. This thing was the size of my pinky finger fingernail. I actually held it extended out fully to use as a reference. That notion came to me from reading many UFO sightings and accounts. The stars were very bright. We saw a few satellites that were moving East to West. They were the same size as the stars. Just like I have always witnessed as a kid when we'd sleep outside in the summers. Like I said, this thing was moving South to North in practically a straight line. We used a compass in the morning to double check. Would any type of rocket be that rounded in shape? It also seemed to have flashed, or had a burst of light that didn't emit outside of it's circle after I had watched it for 5-7 seconds. It was around 10 or 11 pm West Coast time when we saw it. It didn't seem to reflect the sun's light, but seemed to have generated it's own light. There is no way I could calculate it's altitude. I would guess that it may have covered the entire sky from South to North in just over a minute's time. It did seem to travel faster than the satellites we saw.

Comments: A Russian Cosmos 1844 Rocket was visible over the sighting area from 10:02 to 10:13 PM. It was moving northward with a brightness of 3.3. (This is not really bright). the International Space Station (ISS) was visible from the sighting location between 9:55 and 9:58 PM. The ISS would have been visible to the north and would have been moving eastward. Given the report and flight characteristics described by the witnesses the sighting may not have been due to the two above man-made objects. However, this causation cannot be ruled out.
