Man Sees Bright Light Flashing Colors Low in SW Night Sky

Date of Sighting: April 6, 2008
Time of Sighting: 11:30 PM CDT
Date Sighting Reported: April 6, 2008
Duration of Sighting: 7 Minutes
Location of Sighting: Ruston, Louisiana (N. Central Louisiana About 60 MI E. of Shreveport)
Latitude: 32.53 Degrees North
Longitude: 92.64 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: Two
Number Witnesses Interviewed: One
Weather: Clear Skies. Stars Visible. (Per Witness Observation.)

Description: The witness called and reported his sighting within a few hours after it happened. He saw a very bright light in the southwest that kept changing colors ( red, white, blue, and green). He said that the light was low in the southwest when he first noticed it. The light moved slowly westward. He eventually lost sight of it over the horizon. His girl friend in nearby Shreveport saw a similar light, but claimed to be closer to it. She was able to discern a shape similar to a bar of soap.

Comments: Lights in the sky at night are always difficult to identify. The sighting was not a satellite because satellites wouldn't be visible that long after sunset. The light could have been a very high flying jet, but that is not a likely explanation. The man's girl friend at Shreveport saw an object that appeared to be closer. She was able to describe a "soap box" shape. However, it is not known if the witnesses were looking at the same light (object).

Update April 21, 2008: New information provided by the witness has revealed that the object observed is the planet Saturn. The witness has seen the object in the same position on several successive nights. The elevation angle and direction indicate that he has been observing the planet Saturn. Saturn is very bright this month.
