Sighting Reports 2008

Red Light Moving Rapidly Northward in Night Sky Seen

Date of Sighting: January 7, 2008
Time of Sighting: 7:10 PM
Date Sighting Reported: January 7, 2008
Duration of Sighting: 8 Seconds
Location of Sighting: Tampa, Florida
Latitude: 27.947 Degrees North
Longitude: 82.459 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: One
Weather: Scattered Clouds at About 7,500 Feet. Visibility 10 Miles. Winds Were From the ENE at 7 MPH.

Description: I am unsure if what I saw could have been a satellite. It was moving from south to north at a high rate of speed or ten times the speed of a passenger jet at high altitude. I saw no blinking lights. I did not hear any sound. The light appeared to be a dim red color. It was too fast to be a jet and too slow to be a meteor. It had maybe half the intensity of a star.

Comments: A check of visible satellites revealed nothing at the time and date of sighting. The 8 second viewing time is too fast for a satellite. Satellites are normally visible for a few minutes. Given the report I can't explain this sighting.
