Description: This witness has sent several photos to UFOS Northwest during the past of objects that she does not see, but only later discovers in photos. She feels compelled to take photos and later discovers the objects while viewing the photos on her computer. Generally the objects show up in a small percentage of the photos that she takes. The above photos were taken from the James Gilliland Ranch in Trout Lake, Washington. (See website This ranch is thought by many to be a "UFO Hotspot." The witness discovers many conventional objects in her photos like birds, insects, helicopters, and air planes. Therefore she is not likely confusing these objects with conventional objects.

Questions to Professionals Posed by Witness:

I need your help or maybe guidance to find someone who can help me.  I am a UFO buff, and take pictures that are blurred or not clear.  The picture below is an example of this.

This picture was taken 5/30/08 at Mt. Adams, WA. taken with my new Canon 40D 55-350 mm zoom lens on auto focus. This camera takes 6.1 pictures per second.

I believe the object is not a bird or bug, and is in fact blurred but not distorted due to the shutter speed.  I could not see this object when I took the picture.

Do you if the science in this article below is correct or that my picture is a bug?

Comments From a Professional Photographer Obtained by Witness:

Looks like a real UFO to me.

A bird would have been in focus.

A bug close enough to be that big wouldn't have been.

Set the camera to the same aperture and focus at ¡ç, and try yourself.

Of course UFO means we don't know what it is, but its so fast its blurred the time-space continuum.

I'm forwarding this to my brother, a noted PHD and UFO researcher.

Comments Received From Another Photographer:

1.  Did you shoot with continuous mode?  If so, did you review the other frames?
2.  What was the shutter speed you set your camera for this picture?  You should see the specs for this photo in photoshop

My assessment...

1.  If it is a bird, at the distant from you to the bird, 1/60 sec should keep the bird somewhat in focus.  Based on the fact that you are using a 55-350 with the trees and mountain focussed with no vibration, tells me that you are shooting at least 1/60 sec or faster.  Again, this bird should be somewhat clear.

2.  If this is a fast moving object in the sky, you should see a slight trail one way or the other.  Try using your 40D at 1/20 sec at a moving car, you'll see that there is a trailing end away from the moving car, not an even blur as shown on this picture.

3.  The lighting condition on the mountain and trees is from left of the picture to the right.  The moving object should also adopt the same lighting condition.  We should be able to see the same lighting contrast.  We do not see it here.

Question to myself...  What if the object is moving toward or away from the camera and not laterally?  This would account for the even blurriness all around.  But... The contrast question on #3 above is still lingering.

I am not an expert.  I simply used my common sense.

For now, I think it is a bug on your lens.

Comments From a 40 Year Professional Photographer (40 years + a Navy Photographer in Vietnam): Thanks for the photo and for the link to the article. I agree with the author of the article but he's talking about video cameras and not still cameras so I have never observed this phenomena personally so this is an area that is new to me. I must say that something is there because that new lens is very sharp. Look at the foreground and the mountain and everything is in sharp focus from front to back. So, I can't believe that this is a "blurfo". Terry
Note: Photographer is referring to article on "blurfos" on:

UFOS Northwest Comments: It appears that the object in the above photo is of oval shape and slightly out of focus. This could mean that it was moving very fast or was closer than the focus setting of the camera. The shutter speed of the camera was 1/500 seconds so if the "blur" is due to movement, the object would have been moving very fast. The witness solicited comments from other camera professionals and scientists. These comments have been posted. (See above comments.)
