Man Sees Bright Square Object With Trailing Red Light in Night Sky

Sketch of Object Provided by Witness.
Sketch of Object Provided by Witness.

Weott is in Northern California.

Date of Sighting: October 26, 2008
Time of Sighting: 10:30 PM PDT
Date Sighting Reported: October 31, 2008
Duration of Sighting: Unknown
Location of Sighting: Weott, California
Latitude: 40.32 Degrees North
Longitude: 123.92 Degrees West
Number of Witnesses: One
Weather: Light Rain Was Falling. Broken Clouds (Mostly Cloudy) Were Measured at 5,000 Feet and Skies Were Cloudy at 6,500 Feet. Visibility Was 9 Miles. Winds Were Calm.

Description: I have seen this object twice. Both times it was flying south to north. The first time it was approximately 1 mile or less away from me. The second time was just a little further than the first. The first sighting was about 18 months ago and the second 5 days ago. Both times it was a moonless night so I couldn't make out any shape except for what appeared to be a very brightly lit up approximately 20 to 30 foot square. It had one bright red flashing light following that appeared to be attached. It was a very quiet night both times and there was no sound at all. It was traveling at such a slow rate of speed that it would of had to have been either a helicopter or a blimp and I would of heard either of those.

Comments: Given the inclement weather the object would have been flying fairly low (probably below 5,000 feet). The witness's sketch is somewhat confusing as he shows the red light well behind the object. He apparently has seen this same object before. With calm winds he should have heard a helicopter. Blimps wouldn't be emitting much sound, but is unlikely that blimps would be flying at 10:30 PM under inclement weather conditions. Therefore I can't explain this sighting.
