Location of Sighting: Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania (Southeast Pennsylvania)

Description:

Weather Conditions: Warm with thunder storms to the west and northwest at an approximate distance of 10 miles. Scattered cumulus clouds overhead.

A bright shining yellow light was observed in the northwest sky at an approximate altitude of 1,000 feet. The light was very similar to an aircraft landing light in regard to size and brightness. The light appeared to be moving in my direction at about the same speed of a small commercial jet on landing approach. No wings, tail section, landing gear or running lights were visible and there was no sound. A few seconds later the bright light changed to orange flames and now it appeared as a ball of fire. A few more seconds passed, it was now overhead. The flames have died down some and appeared to be on the leading surface of a teardrop or ellipsoid object. I watched the object until it passed behind a tree. My wife joined me as we watched the object emerge from behind the tree. The object was now a black silhouette against a bright sky with scattered clouds. The object was gaining altitude at a slight incline. At the base of a towering cumulus cloud the object nosed up in a vertical attitude, climbed to the crest then nosed over to a horizontal attitude and disappeared from sight over the cloud, approximate altitude 15,000 feet.

The entire episode lasted about three minutes. The speed of the object appeared constant at about 400 mph. No sound was ever heard or smoke trail seen. The size estimated to be that of a utility van.

Note: This sighting has previously been reported to MUFON (Mutual UFO Network). The witness subsequently reported the sighting to UFOS Northwest. The report is displayed because of the excellent illustrations prepared by the witness and the "strangeness" of this sighting.

Comments Received April 9, 2010: I would like to know how the detailed nose design was seen/derived if the craft was moving 400 MPH at 1,000 feet above from the Northwest. Thank you.

UFOS Northwest Response to Above Comment: Thanks for your comments on the Bensalem, PA sighting of July 26, 2009.

You raise a good point: How could the witness get a good look at the object if it was estimated to be at 1,000 feet and traveling 400 MPH? First off I believe the witness was in error at either the height and/or the speed of the object. One really can't estimate distance and speed without a background reference. Also note that the witness had the object in view for 3 minutes. This would be adequate time for him to make an adequate observation to do a sketch.

Comments Received May 2, 2010: The person who filed this sighting is my father, and I know the exact place in the sky where this occurred, though I was not there when it happened. I believe his report on distance and speed is probably inaccurate, however the object's placement in the sky would place the object under the base of a cumulonimbus cloud, placing the altitude of the object at under 3000 feet. Additionally, this event occurred during a period of numerous eye-witness sightings in this area over an 18 month period. Also, this property is in the arriving flight path of the Northeast Philadelphia airport and numerous small to medium aircraft fly over the house every day. Given that my father is also an Air Force veteran, I must give him the benefit of doubt that he knows the distinction between an airplane and something that isn't.
