Sighting Reports 2009

Bright Slow Moving Object Seen in Night Sky

Date of Sighting: March 15, 2009
Time of Sighting: 8:25 to 8:35 PM
Location of Sighting: Derby, Connecticut

Description: While walking parallel to Route 8 Northbound I looked up to my left at the constellation Orion. I noticed at what I thought to be a star at first, but the object was moving at a slow pace. It continued northeast crossing over the highway turning me completely around. The object was brighter than any star in the sky and there were no flashing or other normal aviation lights. Confused and intrigued I continued to stare and then the object seemed that it jumped out of view out of the sky. It just faded. The whole encounter lasted about 1 to 2 minutes. There is an airport not far and I am used to seeing planes and other aircraft. This was not normal. I am also not the only witness. The hue of the light it emitted was different. It was consistent even through the slight haze in the sky.) I was just strange.

Note: The International Space Station (ISS) was visible at the time and area of the sky where the witness saw the light. It is likely that the witness saw the ISS. The ISS was very bright and had a brightness magnitude of -2.5.
