Sighting Reports 2009

Fire Captain Sees Bright Light Moving West in Night Sky on Cloudy Night

Date of Sighting: February 1, 2009
Time of Sighting: 9:20 to 9:45 PM CST
Location of Sighting: Grand Island, Nebraska

Description: I saw an unusual bright light in the western sky. The light was about the size of a dime size at arm's length. The sky was totally cloudy so the light was definitely below the clouds. I first noticed it at perhaps a 25-30 degree angle above the western horizon. I watched it for about 2-3 minutes then looked at it for 20 minutes with a good set of binoculars. It was traveling west as it kept getting lower in the sky. It appeared to change color and intensity. I was definitely not a plane or known object.

Additional Information: The light was white, except when I viewed it with binoculars it appeared white turning to red and also green and back again. There had to be several people from Nebraska witnessing this. With the total cloudy cover it was the only light it the sky.

Note: The fact that skies were cloudy eliminates stars, planets, satellites as the source of the sighting. The light could have been an aircraft, but that is doubtful considering that the witness described the apparently large size of the light (size of a dime at arm's length). It should be noted that white, red, and green are the color of lights mounted on conventional aircraft. Also official weather observations show that skies were clear at Grand Island at the time of sighting.
