Couple See Luminescent Object With Flashing Lights in Eastern Sky

Date of Sighting: January 17, 2009
Time of Sighting: 11:25 - 11:45 PM PST
Location of Sighting: Sequim, Washington

Description: My wife and I saw a strange, flashing object in the eastern sky from our home in Sequim, WA, which is at 48.08 Degrees North & 123.10 Degrees West, at an elevation of 500 ft. from sea level. There were no clouds in the sky at all and the visibility was unlimited. the temperature was about 38 degrees F. and there was no wind. From our house in the Olympic Mountains, we could see literally thousands of stars with the naked eye, as there is little, if any, light pollution.
The strange, bright light stood out in the night sky and my wife first saw it. It caught her attention as a very bright, white, light low in the eastern sky that would change colors (into red, blue, green, violet, etc) and spin. There appeared, at times, a white light above the tree line beneath the main light. This light would appear briefly and travel a short distance to the right or left and then disappear, while always remaining beneath the main light in the sky. There was some heat-wave distortion from the earth causing the flashing and spinning light to blur. We watched it for about 10 minutes with binoculars and a 60X spotting scope mounted on a tripod. The colors (red, blue, green) were very bright and clear and it looked like the red lights were spinning on the outside of the object, with the blue and green lights flashing on the inside of the object. My wife described the object as an elongated, diamond shape, which had multiple geometric planes on the surface. It appeared luminescent and was spinning rapidly, while the surface changed colors.
The object was not a star, planet, or any type of airplane! It stayed stationary--just the earth's rotation made it appear as if it moved ever so slightly from the East to the South. I filmed about 30 minutes of the object from the deck of our house. I have a Sony Hi8 video camera that has 20X optical and 560X digital zoom. I used a tripod and can send you a copy of the video if you like, but it is obviously a very large digital file--maybe 250MB or more.
I have checked online to see what this object could be, but I can't seem to find an explanation for it being there. It does not appear to be a reflection off a satellite, as the object was in a stationary orbit, and the HeavansAbove web site does not list any such objects in the Eastern sky for that night--especially one that was there for over one hour!
It also does not appear to be: the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the International Space Station (ISS), an Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (USRS), or a Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE), or one of the many NASA, Cosmos, GPS, or Lacrosse satellites. I also cannot find any other report of this unidentified object in any Google search I have made.
So, we are asking your help in trying to identify this object. Please feel free to call or e-mail at my contact information listed below.
Thank You!

Note: Saturn was in the area of the sky where the witnesses saw the light. However, Saturn was not that bright so it is not likely that the sighting was of Saturn.
