Man Sees Flying Object, Hover, Move & Abruptly Change Direction

Description: I was laying awake this morning and at about approximately 1:29 AM when I was staring out my window. I noticed a flying object in the sky above the I-5 area (it could of been miles away). It had lights that were like strobe lights, bright and would flash 3 times and pause then repeat this sequence. I noticed it would move to the north than just hover in one area for a second, and then head south so quick that there is no possible way it could be an aircraft familiar to me. It was going back and forth. I thought I was going crazy until I woke my girlfriend and she witnessed what I was seeing.
I met with a friend this morning for breakfast and had mentioned what I had seen. The interesting thing is that about the same time (1:30 AM) he heard a loud noise that almost resembled a jet. He went outside to see what the noise was, and there was nothing in sight. He said it lasted about 5 minutes.
