Marco Island Island is Along the Southwestern Coast of Florida.

Date of Sighting: September 14, 2010
Time of Sighting: Around 9 PM EDT
Location of Sighting: Marco Island, Florida (See Map)

Description: I observed of orange lights off Florida's coast. I saw 3 lights that were orange balls fly over my head. They disappeared and then a minute later 10 orange lights showed up looking like a huge firework in the sky. Three people I was with saw it. Then it flew away silent. I wanted to call 911, but what would they do?

Second Report From Witness (In Response to Questions): It flew over my head. Three of these balls were very high. They flew off over the horizon and then shortly after they appeared like a firework in the sky. Then it just flew off again. Here are a couple more shots. (These photos are not displayed above.) It lasted maybe 5 minutes. I also fly airplane and can't explain it either. If you zoom in the picture you can see more objects and there is a trail of orange dust that seemed to follow the object. I also saw many objects that looked just like the lights over the hills of Arizona a few years back that people said were flares?

Third Report From Witness (In Response to Questions): There are four movies taken from the 7th floor of a Marco Condominium. The guy shot about 20 minutes of video.

Address for YouTube Video (Video Taken at 8:40 PM EDT):

Fourth Report From Witness (In Response to Questions Regarding first two photos above.): No the photos were all taken around 9 PM last night (September 14, 2010). I spoke to the local paper and news that said public affairs officers didn't really have much to say from Homestead Air Force Base. Yes, the Coast Guard said they were flares, but do you believe that? What flares look like that and why on a Tuesday night right before a thunderstorm hundreds of miles off shore. Are they training? The videos on YouTube are good, but it doesn't show the first 3 flying in from the north. If you draw a line from where I was standing off into the gulf and take another line from where the video was shot we should be able to get a idea where they were and how far away and at what altitude. Some lights were by the horizon and others were what appeared to be in space, They were so high.

Note: NBC news reports said that the Coast Guard said that the Air Force (Homestead Air Force Base?) claimed responsibility for the light sightings and that the lights were flares. The Youtube video does not appear to be flares. The movement (stationary altitude and continued brightness do not suggest flares or "Chinese Lanterns." Why is the Coast Guard responding in behalf of the Air Force? Apparently (according to the witness) Homestead Air Force Base has not claimed any involvement.

Update - September 17, 2010: I have spoken to the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) at Homestead Air Force which is about 100 miles southeast of Marco Island. The PAO told me that the Air Force was conducting exercises on the night of September 14 in the area where people saw lights, took videos and photos. He said that F16 aircraft did "pop off" some flares in the exercises and that was likely what the YouTube video showed. This information was disseminated to the media by the PAO. Given this information one should conclude that the witnesses sighted flares.
