Sighting Reports 2010

Several See Orange Object Move Southward in Late Evening Sky

Newberg is About 15 Miles Southwest of Portland.
Newberg is About 15 Miles Southwest of Portland.

Date of Sighting: June 27, 2010
Time of Sighting: 9:30 to 10 PM PDT
Location of Sighting: Newberg, Oregon (See Map)

Description: I saw an orange object moving in the sky from North of town, over Chehalem Mountain, moving in a direct line toward the south. The speed appeared to be about the same as what would be expected with a small plane (Equivalent to 100 knots at 5,000 feet). There was no sound. It was just after sunset, and the sky still had light. The orange was not steady, but at times appeared to be flame, getting much brighter then a little dimmer. At first I thought it was a plane on fire. Then I thought it could be a silver plane picking up reflection from the setting sun, but the variation in the brightness was too varied. As it passed over head, and then toward the south end of town, it slowed down, then stopped. It appeared to be making a small circle while it stood relatively still. Then it slowly started to fade, and then disappeared. I was out for a walk and watched it with several other people in front of their house. They said that the previous night, they saw the same thing after dark, around 10:30 pm. It had the same behavior and then 5 minutes later they said that they saw it again.

Note: Northwestern Oregon has had several sightings since April, 2010. It is not known if any of these sightings are related as many different descriptions have been reported.

Comments Received June 29, 2010: My wife and I were sitting in the backyard with two other families, about 8 of us in total, all neighbors. All of us witnessed this exact same thing while trying to give a logical explanation of what we were witnessing. Their were planes up at the same time, so that ruled out a conventional aircraft. I could have been a hot air balloon, but it seemed too high and it moved too quickly. So of course, nothing was holding water. It was an orange orb that moved North to South in pretty much a straight line with no erratic movements. It made no sound and there was no outline of a craft, and it seemed to be at an elevation between the smaller planes and the commercial jets that were up at the same time. The object came to a complete stop and from our viewpoint seemed to remain motionless for a couple of minutes. Then it just faded away like it was accelerating upward out of the atmosphere, but it didn't seem like a high rate of speed since it was a gradual fade away of the light. One of the neighbors we were with had mentioned they had seen this before a couple of weeks prior, but it was two orange orbs. That would confirm an earlier sighting in Newberg that is already posted on this site. (I think that this sighting was on the 11th of June.)
