Sighting Reports 2010 - Four See Glowing Orange Orb Floating Through Sky -Date of Sighting: May 25, 2010 Description: Last night my daughter frantically called me to the back deck. There was a large bright, glowing orange orb floating in the sky just above our tree line (40 feet). It was about 3.5 feet in diameter. At first I thought it was fireworks debris, but there were no ashes trailing from it. And it didn't move the way you would expect burning debris to move. Then I thought it was a chinese lantern, but this was close ( approximately 50 feet away) and was no lantern. It was not perfectly round. It was like a ball of orange gas with an irregular surface. It was silent. It traveled east with the wind, but then it moved with direction in a straight line. It was definitely burning, but what gas burns this tangerine orange color? We didn't get a photo even though the cell phone was right on the table. Additional Information Supplied by Witness (In Response to Investigator Questions): Hi William. I was less than 50 feet away from the object. It was not high in the sky. No meteor moves that slow. It traveled 40 feet in about 6 seconds. It was floating, not falling. Then it turned, as to avoid the trees, turned again to get to a clearing in between the houses, then it picked up speed and went in a straight line. When it went in the straight line there was no wind at the time.
I observed it for almost a minute. My daughter a little longer.
A meteor that large and that close to the ground would have landed. It was over 3 feet in diameter.
It was a flaming ball moving on its own propulsion. It was man made for sure, some kind of experiment maybe on alternative fuels.
It was still daylight when we saw it.
Many others must have seen it too. A lot of people are outside when the weather is this nice.
I live in a crowded neighborhood. It was not a chinese lantern because it was not open at the bottom - I clearly saw the bottom. It didn't move with the wind.
Note: Given the additional information provided by the witness the object was clearly not a meteor. There was a reported meteor 24 hours earlier (9:35 PM EDT in Roc Mec, Ontario). Sunset was at 8:46 PM EDT so the object must have been quite bright to have been seen in the daylight. Send Drawings, Photos, or Videos Relating to Your Comments
