Sighting Reports 2011

Lights in Boomerang Formation Seen Flying Low in Night Sky

Gastonia is in South-Central North Carolina.
Gastonia is in South-Central North Carolina.

Date of Sighting: June 25, 2011
Time of Sighting: Between 10 and 10:30 PM EDT
Location of Sighting: Gastonia, North Carolina (See Map)

Description: My husband and I were sitting on our front porch and he happened to look up. He started telling me "you have got to see this." I looked and there were 2 lights (well only 2 that we were focused on) that were much lower than the planes (and we are only 10 miles from airport). The lights were not blinking and at first appeared to be individual of each other then they merged closer and maintained almost a boomerang type pattern. They were moving fairly slow and there were several planes flying towards the airport as well so SOMEONE else HAD to have seen this. We yelled for my daughter to come out with her cell so we could get pictures, but she didn't get there in time. I don't know what it was, but it was very low and very obviously NOT an airplane, helicopter or shooting star. We both are still in disbelief. I have never in my life not been able to explain what I saw.

Second Report by Witness (In Response to Investigator Questions): Sorry, in my excitement (and still disbelief ) I posted without being clear. We both noticed what at first looked like 1 light as it got closer you could tell it was 2 (low enough to tell they had some sort of shape to them, but too bright causing almost a sort of shadowing so couldn't make the shape out) that were not blinking and were EXTREMELY low right around cloud level. There were several airplanes headed toward the airport which is only 10 miles from us) and these lights appeared much lower and slower in speed and the lights were moving independently of each other at first, but continue sly circling around each other yet maintaining a straight consistent travel pattern. As they passed over our house the lights moved even closer together and were in such synch with each other in movement. For some reason the movement reminded me of a boomerang pattern. (My husband doesn't agree about the boomerang thing so I guess its all in perception). I still cannot believe what we saw and it was most definitely not a plane, helicopter, balloon or shooting star. Also they made no noise which was odd being as low as they were. We called around and found no information which is odd being that the air control monitors so closely and this being so close to Charlotte Douglas Airport and being so low. Looking on google at last night's date, I was able to find many articles and pictures from other people all over the country, but so far none locally. Someone HAD to see it. There were several planes coming in and it was a relatively clear night.. It was just so odd. It is hard to put into words because it truly was something I have never seen. Also the lights appeared white or soft yellow and not blue or red like I have seen some people mention.

Note: Some confusion exists in the report in that the witness mentions 2 lights were seen and they were in boomerang formation. Therefore at least 3 lights must have been seen. Questions have been posed to the witness to clarify this discrepancy. Updates will be posted. Another report of strange airborne lights was received from Lincoln, North Carolina which is about 10 miles north of Gastonia.

Update: See the second report by witness above which clarifies number of lights and configuration.
