Bright White Blue Light Illuminates Clouds on Heavy Overcast Night

Sighting Occurred About 15 Miles East of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Sighting Occurred About 15 Miles East of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Date of Sighting: April 28, 2011
Time of Sighting: 11:30 PM EDT
Location of Sighting: About 15 Miles East of Grand Rapids, Michigan (See Map)

Description: At about 11:30 PM I turned off lights in my living room and looked out a northern window just as a large portion of the sky became very bright, with a bluish white light. The night was heavily overcast, and the light reflected back up onto the clouds, but the source was apparently above them. As I watched, the lights changed to a whiter light and then to a more focused red, suddenly intensifying and dimming as though a switch had been thrown. The changes of color and intensity continued, sometime stopping altogether. There was no discernable timing pattern. I watched for about 30 minutes, but finally went to bed. At about 2 AM the lights were still occasionally active, but at 4 AM or so they had disappeared. Last night was absolutely clear, so I scanned the horizon to see if there was any sort of new cell tower, etc. that might have been responsible. There was not. The lights had brightly illuminated about 5 to 10 degrees of arc horizontally a very sizeable area.
