Sighting Reports 2011

Fishermen See Bright Flashing Objects Move North in Night Sky

Kendallville is in Northeastern Indiana.
Kendallville is in Northeastern Indiana.

Date of Sighting: June 3, 2011
Time of Sighting: 11 to 11:30 PM EDT
Location of Sighting: Kendallville, Indiana (See Map)

Description: Two friends and myself were fishing on a boat the night of June 3rd, 2011 at Bixler lake, around 11:00 PM. After a while with no luck fishing we all decided to head back onto shore. We were on the far side of the lake from the boat launch so we had a few minutes trip back. I noticed what appeared to be a star at first. But I quickly realized it was moving. I thought at first "ok, my eyes are just playing tricks with me," then my friend said "HEY!! HERE WE GO, LOOK AT THAT!!!!" He quickly shut off the motor and we all stared in amazement not entirely sure what we were looking at. We ruled out it being an airplane due to the fact that it was so high and in comparison to airplanes we saw flying there was no similarities. It kept moving one direction (considerably fast given the objects altitude) until disappearing. After it disappeared the 3 of us gazed into area we last saw it when suddenly there was a flash of 3 bright considerably larger lights in the exact area the object disappeared. We kept staring in amazement when there was another flash, but it was only a single light. Just a couple of minutes later we saw another flash. The flashes appeared to be around the same altitude as the original objects.

My friend started the motor back up and started back for shore. On our way back we witnessed another object nearly identical to the first one heading in the same direction going the same speed at the same altitude. However, this object would get bright then dim, bright then dim. We watched this object until it was no longer visible. Before we got to shore we witnessed this two more times. Both objects were heading in the same direction with the same speed and altitude. (They were not brightening up then going dim like the second.) Once we were ashore we watched the sky a little longer and saw one more object heading the exact opposite direction of the previous four. The first four objects were heading north and the last one was heading south. I can't say for certain whether it was straight north or south, but I know for a fact it was in the general direction.

I have never seen anything like this before in my life and neither had either of my friends. There were no drugs or alcohol involved whatsoever with our fishing trip. I thought I was seeing things at first, but as soon as I realized my friends were seeing the exact same thing that thought quickly changed.

If anyone else saw this please say so.

Additional Comments by Witness (June 6, 2011): Yes, 2011 was the intended date. I am not sure how I ended up with 2004. There was a satellite clearly visible south of us that seemed to slowly be moving our direction. Since reading of the iridium satellites I decided to watch some videos. However similar the iridium flares were to what we witnessed wasn't quite the same as the videos I have seen. All of the videos I have seen of iridium satellites show a bright glow that quickly dims. The flashes we saw were like that of a camera flash. We saw five objects all together the very last one was moving south. Could these all have been iridium satellites? All the objects were at quite a high altitude and appeared to be moving rather fast. They were moving much faster than the airliners we could see at a much lower altitude.

Note: An iridium flare satellite was visible at the time and location of the sighting. The satellite was moving northward as described by the witnesses. However, the one satellite may not account for all of the flashes seen by the witnesses?
