Sighting Reports 2011Unknown Object Shows Up in Photo of Moon.
Date of Sighting: March 19, 2011
Description: I took this picture of the moon on the night the moon was closest to earth (March 19, 2011). Upon viewing the picture my wife asked me what was the marking on the lower part of the picture. I zoomed the picture and it appears to be a series of lights. The lights are quite unique and I can't explain it because when I took the picture I did not see the lights. Additionally, when I took the picture there was nothing between me and the moon.
Note: The photo is likely the original and not a fabrication. The photo was taken with a BlackBerry 9700. The source of the light (object) could be due to a number of causes, but I am not able to provide an explanation.
Comments Received April 14, 2011: Internal reflections or lens flares have to be considered anytime a photo is taken toward a bright object against a dark background especially with inexpensive equipment that is only secondarily intended for photography. That being said, the artifact is not symmetric around the axis between it and the moon as one would often expect of a flare, but I would still bet on a flare over anything else.
