Sighting Reports 201120 to 30 Large Orange Orbs in Sky Move Horizontally. Photo Taken.
Date of Sighting: October 22, 2011
Description: We were driving towards Peoria around where Highway 74 meets 474. We saw about 20 to 30 large orange orbs in the sky moving horizontally. There were probably about 5 other cars pulled over to look at them. We pulled over and were able to get a few pictures. The pictures that we were able to catch really don't do the sighting justice. I had never seen anything like it before. These were not tiny specks on the sky either and they were moving in two different clusters together across the sky. The sighting lasted about 7 to 10 minutes. One of the objects looked as if it had a very small one traveling around it. We took a video with the phone too, but it didn't turn out that well. You can hear our reaction on it though. It was interesting that others had noticed them too. You couldn't miss them. We did not report them other than here so far. They were very exciting to see. Wow!
Comments Received October 25, 2011: My wife and I also saw the lights, but fewer in number. We saw approximately 6 or 7. We were headed east on I-74 and seemed to pass directly underneath as we made the gradual turn onto I-474. The color was bright orange and at least one light appeared to be on fire. They also appeared to be in the same pattern as photographed.
Comments Received October 24, 2011: I saw the same thing almost identical to the description in Peoria. My sighting was in Caledonia, Michigan at 9:20 PM EDT. The only difference is that they changed direction horizontally and as they came closer they faded out and disappeared. All but one that backtracked and headed up and faded away. I also saw the small light that seemed to be a different color than the orange-ish color the others were. Many cars were pulled over to watch along with mine. I unfortunately did not have my camera or phone with me. Amazing!
Comments Received October 24, 2011: We were traveling west on Highway 74 that evening also about 10 PM and saw the same thing. My husband wondered if it may have been the German satellite that fell that evening?
Update October 29, 2011: We have received several comments from a group claiming responsibility for the lights. This group was having a birthday party and launched several Chinese Lanterns. Although there is no proof that the lanterns were launched the sighting reports fit the behavior of Chinese Lanterns.
