Sighting Reports 2011 Series of Red/Orangish/Yellowish) Lights Move East in Night Sky
Date of Sighting: May 28, 2011 Description: We were finishing gardening after dark (downtown Toronto, West side, Parkdale) and suddenly we noticed a series of (what appeared to be red/orangish/yellowish) lights moving from west to east in the sky. They were not flashing or flickering, but would wane in and out or the odd one would suddenly disappear/phase out. Then as we would look back to the northwest we would see more coming. We came into the house assuming that this must be on the radio or internet as there was no way that we would be the only ones to see this. The few people that passed by us on the street we asked what they thought and they all were also baffled. It definitely was not a plane as the speed at which they moved would make it much too slow for that. Also if so it would be illegal as there was no flashing light. Moreover the configuration of the lights were very erratic and thus did not meet any aviation regulations for flight paths. A helicopter did appear during the time we were watching. It was closer and you could hear it. This is very strange. Does anyone know what that might have been? We did not take a video. We assumed that we would come into the house and hear reports on the news. Strangely, we heard no reports? Additional Comments by Witness: Alternatively my mother just sent me an email saying that she heard something on the weather channel tonight. They were talking about lights in the sky saying that particles of dust or ash get caught up in the air and apparently if there is lightening around they can become quite active. They apparently showed a cluster or two of such things. They were white mainly, but the odd red, blue and perhaps yellow. While writing to you now my boyfriend did some further searching on the Chinese lanterns. He thinks maybe you are right that the lights were Chinese lanterns. Note: The witness's report fits the description of Chinese lanterns. A check of weather conditions showed that skies were overcast with visibility at 9 miles. Skies were mostly cloudy at 9,100 feet and overcast at 19,000 feet. Surface winds were light from the northeast. However, winds aloft were from the southwest to west in the lower 10,000 feet. This is consistent with the movement of the objects observed by the witnesses. Comments Received May 29, 2011: What you are saying is exactly right I witnessed this as well. I was at my in laws house in the Parkdale area and about 10 of us noticed the exact same thing. It was amazing! I also took a mini video of it on my picture camera. It wasn't very clear, but noticeable! More Comments Received on May 29, 2011: I also live in West Toronto (Parkdale) and saw the same images as described. I and two others saw 6 in the north sky. They were orange in color. They moved east. The estimated time was 10:10 PM on May 28,2011. Send Drawings, Photos, or Videos Relating to Your Comments
