Description: It was 1969. I was 14 years old. We witnessed a UFO sighting in my backyard by my mother and my best friend. My mother is now 93 and remembers like it was yesterday. There were thousands of lighting bugs in my yard. We were looking at this phenomenon when I looked up between a large grove of trees and saw a UFO with circular lights that glowed not unlike the lightning bugs. The UFO lights did not shine outward and cast no shadows. At first the UFO hovered at about 100 ft. in the air, but then began a slow descent until it was only about 8 feet above our heads. We backed up, hoping to be able to look inside the visible windows that circled the object, just above its lights, but we could not see inside. The UFO was about 20 feet in diameter. The object made no sound at all. It hovered for approximately 15 minutes and then began a slow ascent up to about 200 feet above our heads, before it shot straight up to nothing more than a tiny ball of light in the sky. At this point it left the sky in what I term start/stop movements, as it stopped abruptly after each burst of movement across the sky. However, the object was traveling so fast that it was completely gone from the sky in about 3 seconds. We could not tell what color the object was, but when it was only 8 feet over our heads it appeared to be either dark gray or dark greenish, but we couldn't be sure.

Additional Information Sent by Witness: This is a comment to my report. We never reported having seen a UFO, because no one would have believed us (especially a close sighting like ours, and in 1969, people thought you were nuts for seeing UFOs). Anyway someone did report seeing an object fly overhead that night in the same very fast start/stop movements that I described, and a small article appeared in our local newspaper the very next night. My mom read it to me and she commented, "someone saw our UFO fly over last night, but they didn't see it only a stone's throw away like we did, and I'll bet no one did."
