Location of Sighting: Fort Lauderale, Florida
Date of Sighting: August 21, 1979
Time of Sighting: 1:10 AM EDT
Description; My sighting was made from a sailboat 6 nautical miles east of Fort Lauderale, FL Airport (FLL). The object initially was stationary over and slightly to the north of FLL, flashing orange and white, at an altitude of about 2,000 feet. One plane was departing FLL to the south (likely an MD-80) so the relative size of the object was about 1/2 the length of the plane and the object’s altitude was determined using the take-off profile of the plane. Exiting it’s stationary location, the object rose straight up to about 5,000 feet, paused for a moment, then executed a triple V (VVV) maneuver north to south between 5,000 and 2,000 feet. Then it paused in a stationary position at 5,000 feet just south of FLL. Within 15 seconds the object streaked off and rapidly disappeared heading in a WSW direction while rapidly gaining altitude. The light from the object looked like the streaks made by the hyper-speed lights in the early Star Wars movies.
