White Streak Hovers, Slowly Moves Across Sky.

Location of Sighting: Lincoln City, Oregon
Date of Sighting: June 23, 2017
Time of Sighting: 9:06 PM PDT

Description: This was taken at Road’s End State Park, Lincoln City, OR, Friday, June 23, 2017 just after sunset at 9:06 PM. The streak just hovered, then slowly moved across the sky. It was to the west, I think. (I’m not good with directions.) At first I thought it was a comet, but it was moving way too slow. Then, I thought maybe it could be a plane or a jet streak, but it was just hovering before moving. After that, I just gave up trying to identify it. It moved slowly across the sky before fading in about 6 or 7 minutes. I didn’t time it. I just watched it. Sorry I don’t have any more information.

Note: The photo appears to show an aircraft with a short contrail over the Pacific Ocean. The short contrail could be the result of a dry atmospheric resulting in evaporation of the contrail shortly after formation. However, the witness stated that the “streak” hovered and then moved. This casts some doubt on this explanation.

  1. Observer says:

It is likely the aircraft & contrail were moving toward the observer at a slight angle, giving the impression it was “hovering”. At some point the aircraft/contrail began moving away from the observer at a larger angle & leaving the resulting contrail.

Yes, that is true that the aircraft could have been moving away (or towards) the observer giving the impression of hovering. However, the craft was likely flying parallel to the coast given that it was seen over the ocean. If that is true, it would have been flying north or south and therefore perpendicular to the observer. This is the path of many airliners.
